Type 1 diabetes happens when the body makes little or no insulin. Classic symptoms often appear more quickly than in type 2.
Warning signs
- Intense thirst and frequent urination over a short period
- Hunger with weight loss
- Marked weakness, nausea or vomiting
- Unusual breath odor, rapid breathing, sleepiness or confusion
These can signal serious decompensation. Seek medical care promptly—especially in children, teens, or young adults. See also general symptoms.
